‘Rooted in Danville’ photo contest

The Town of Danville is asking local photographers to showcase their connections to the town’s history in a new photo contest.

“Participants are encouraged to submit original, unedited photographs of a historic location in Danville,” organizers said in a press release May 2. “Whether it’s a snapshot at one of the many Danville summer events, a candid moment at the Museum of the San Ramon Valley, or a beloved park, the goal is to celebrate places that represent Danville’s unique heritage

Submissions are open through May 30 for the “Rooted in Danville” photo contest, in which heavily edited images will not be considered. One photo per contestant can be submitted in a high resolution, JPEG format of at least 2625 x 3075 pixels. Entries should be submitted via email to Recreation Superintendent Jessica Wallner at jwallner@danville.ca.gov.

Art Uncorked

The City of San Ramon and the San Ramon Arts Foundation are inviting artists and community members to partake in a combination of fine art and wine at the upcoming Art Uncorked market and celebration.

“Guests will sip wine, enjoy live acoustic music, and mingle with fellow art lovers as you share your unique creations for sale with the community,” organizers said in an announcement last month. “It’s going to be a day full of inspiration, good vibes, and plenty of art to explore.”

The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday (May 10) at the Dougherty Valley Community Arts Center. More information is available here.

Layoffs at SRVUSD

The Board of Education at the San Ramon Valley Unified School District is set for a special meeting during which it is poised to vote on finalizing layoffs for both classified and certificated staff.

Positions for nearly 140 employees across the two groups are on the chopping block, with the layoffs coming as part of the district’s overall budget reduction package aimed at balancing its finances amid an ongoing structural deficit.

The upcoming resolutions are separate from an agreement reached between district management and SRVEA, which must be ratified by the teachers union prior to board approval.

The SRVUSD board is set to meet at 4:30 p.m. Friday (May 9). The agenda is available here.

The Great Indian Food Fest

The Association of Indo-Americans is inviting the community to celebrate Indian cuisine this weekend in San Ramon at the Great Indian Food Fest.

In addition to food, the free event is set to feature carnival rides and games, live entertainment, and more than 100 booths offering clothing and jewelry for sale.

The celebration is set for 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday (May 10) at 2700 Camino Ramon behind City Center Bishop Ranch. More information and registration is available here.

‘Legends of Realism’

This weekend marks the second and final showings of Las Positas College’s theater arts department’s spring production of “Legends of Realism” — and the shows this Saturday and Sunday are being performed at the historic Tao House in Danville.

Produced as a partnership among the college, the Eugene O’Neill Foundation and the National Park Service, the show is a collection of three one-act plays accompanied by musical interludes: “Thirst” by O’Neill, “Trifles” by Susan Glaspell and “The Bear” by Anton Chekhov.

“The production explores gripping themes through three distinct settings: an abandoned raft drifting in shark-infested waters, a lonely farmhouse hiding dark secrets, and a battle of wills between two impassioned lovers in a Russian drawing room,” according to a press release from Las Positas.

After last weekend’s opening run at the college’s Mertes Center for the Arts Black Box Theater, this weekend’s performances are set for 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Tao House, O’Neill’s former home in the Danville hills. Learn more at lpc.ludus.com.
