The Danville Town Council is set to vote next week on the appointment of a new town manager as Joe Calabrigo prepares for retirement at the end of next month.
Assistant Town Manager Tai Williams is the council’s pick for Calabrigo’s successor following a series of closed session meetings on the topic, with an employment agreement for her appointment on the table at the upcoming council meeting.
“The council was tasked with finding a new town manager and did not look further than our own backyard,” Danville Mayor Renee Morgan said. “We interviewed and offered the position to Tai Williams, our current assistant town manager.”
Williams will have big shoes to fill upon the finalization of her appointment to the position, with Calabrigo having been in the position since 1993 after beginning his tenure on the town’s staff a decade prior to that.
However, Williams also boasts a long tenure with the town, having served as assistant town manager since 2017, and as a town staff member for more than 20 years. She first came on board as a transportation manager in 2001 before being promoted to director of transportation and economic development in 2005, then shifting to director of community development and information technology in 2012. She served as administrative services director from 2015 to 2017 prior to being appointed to her current role as assisting Calabrigo.
“Tai will ensure a smooth transition from our current Town Manager to her new role,” Morgan said. “Her experience as the assistant town manager will help maintain continuity in leadership and services for the community.”
Williams is poised to be the fourth town manager in Danville’s history since its incorporation in 1982. Her employment agreement is set to go into effect July 1, the day after Calabrigo’s final day on the job, June 30. She is set to receive a $265,000 salary for the first year along with a $79,500 pension contribution and $4,200 auto allowance.Â
The Danville Town Council is set to meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday (June 3). The agenda is available here.
