A Dublin Unified School District spokesperson confirmed to the Weekly that a Frederiksen Elementary School student brought a knife onto campus, an incident that had prompted parent criticism on social media about lack of public information from school officials.
On May 23, a 9-year-old Frederiksen student found a two-inch blade while on their walk to school, according to DUSD director of communication Chip Dehnert. But instead of reporting it, the student decided to show the knife to a few classmates — one of whom informed school staff about the small blade.
“The student, who has no history of behavioral issues, was brought to the office, where the knife was confiscated,” Dehnert said. “This all transpired prior to the start of the school day.”
One Frederiksen parent called out the school on Nextdoor on May 27 for not having notified parents about the incident and for not suspending or expelling the student.
Dehnert said the school called in the parents of the student who found the knife and that “immediate disciplinary action was taken”. He added the school spoke with the parents of the students who were shown the knife but “after a holistic review of the situation, no further communication was made.”
