Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon welcomes new leadership this week, with an assistant principal taking the helm of the school following the former principal’s appointment to a role with the district in its human resources department.

DVHS Principal Evan Powell was selected as director of human resources for classified personnel by the district’s board in a closed session decision at their Dec. 13 meeting. DVHS Assistant Principal Lauren Falkner was chosen to take the reins at the high school at the board’s most recent meeting Tuesday, with the move going into effect Thursday (Feb. 1).

Powell completed his final day on the job as principal Wednesday, after serving approximately four years in the position. He previously held roles as a middle school principal, assistant high school principal, athletic director, and physical education teacher over the course of his more than 16-year tenure with the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.

“Mr. Powell’s new role is a testament to his leadership qualities and dedication to the students, families, and staff of SRVUSD,” district Superintendent John Malloy said in an announcement to DVHS families following the board’s Dec. 13 meeting.

Falkner has served as assistant principal at DVHS since 2019, aside from the 2022-23 school year during which she served as a coordinator of curriculum and instruction for the district.

She previously held the role of assistant principal at Charlotte Wood Middle School, as well as other positions including summer school principal, teacher induction program mentor, science instructional coach, and administrative teacher on special assignment. Prior to that, she worked as a science and biology teacher outside the district and as a biology teacher at California High School.

“She is an experienced educational leader with a strong commitment to academic excellence, social-emotional wellness, student-connectedness, and parent engagement,” Malloy said in a statement to DVHS families on Wednesday.

Falkner’s assistant principal role is open starting Thursday, with recruitment for her successor underway this week.
