The San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s Board of Education is set to consider proposed cuts to staff from a range of departments as well as numerous teachers in special assignment positions at its next regular meeting.

The agenda for the upcoming meeting includes two proposed resolutions for the reductions, one of which would consist of the discontinuance of classified positions amounting to more than 33 full-time positions according to the full-time equivalent (FTE) metric, as well as 29 teacher on special assignment positions.

The item comes to the board following a budget workshop at a special meeting on Feb. 26, during which they discussed proposals for how to reduce spending by at least $10 million starting in the next school year.

The district is facing a number of budget challenges resulting in the need to reduce spending next school year such as declining enrollment and decreased funding from multiple sources, including a projected $8.3 million less in Local Control Funding Formula revenue and a reduced cost-of-living adjustment. Anticipated increased costs for goods and services as well as healthcare and pension expenses are also factors, among others.

The reductions for classified staff would include one full-time budget analyst position, more than 14 instructional assistant positions and more than 11 paraeducator positions. The move has been tentatively agreed to by the district and the California School Employees Association according to a staff report prepared for the upcoming meeting.

According to district staff, the move would save approximately $545,000 per year in expenses, as well as reducing categorical fund expenditures by approximately $804,500.

In a separate resolution up for consideration by the board, district staff are proposing a reduction in some teaching services that would lead to the elimination of the equivalent of 29 full-time certificated positions consisting of one teacher on special assignment for equity and 28 teachers on special assignment liaison positions.

The proposed cuts to certificated staff would save the district an estimated $4,426,000 in spending.

The SRVUSD board is set to meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (March 5). The agenda is available here.
