The San Ramon Valley Unified School District’s board of education announced the appointment of new principals for two of the district’s elementary schools at their most recent meeting following a closed session discussion on the decisions.
Starting July 1, Creekside Elementary School in Danville will be led by incoming principal Jessica Wiggington and Bassant Abdelrahman will take the reins at Quail Run Elementary School in San Ramon. Both currently serve as assistant principals at Dougherty Valley High School.
“Congratulations to everybody,” Board President Laura Bratt said at the board’s May 14 meeting, following a unanimous vote in closed session on both principal appointments and other appointments made that evening. “We’re excited to have you all.”
Superintendent John Mallloy shared the news with the Quail Run and Creekside communities in email announcements the next morning.
Abdelrahman first joined the district in 2022 according to Malloy’s announcement, having previously worked as a middle school vice principal and science teacher in San Carlos after moving to California from Texas.
“As a leader, Ms. Abdelrahman believes in collaboration and partnership with staff, families and students,” Malloy said. “She will embrace all the wonderful attributes that make Quail Run a unique and vibrant school community and build upon them to ensure that all feel welcome and accepted and that students are provided exemplary learning experiences.”
Abdelrahman is set to take the reins from current Quail Run Principal Mimi Quan, who has been in the position since 2013. Quan announced in late March that she would be departing to work as coordinator of assesment, research, and evaluation for the Contra Costa County Office of Education.
“While this decision was not made lightly, I am excited about the opportunity to continue making a difference in the lives of students and staff on a broader scale,” Quan said in an announcement to the school.
Wiggington started at the district as a teacher at Pine Valley Middle School prior to her current post at Dougherty Valley, with Malloy telling Creekside families that he was “confident that she will have a positive and lasting impact” at Creekside in his May 15 announcement.
“Ms. Wigginton is a passionate educator who maintains professionalism, ethics and integrity and places student achievement and well-being at the center of decision making,” Malloy said. “By meaningfully involving staff and families, she facilitates safe and inclusive environments that support a welcoming school community and provide exceptional learning opportunities for students. Ms. Wigginton maintains open lines of communication with staff and families and is dedicated to building relationships with all members of the community.”
Wiggington is set to succeed current Creekside Principal Alice Tumilty, who has been in the position since 2019. Tumilty is departing Creekside to serve as principal of Los Perales Elementary School in the Moraga School District.
“While I am thrilled about this opportunity to serve an elementary school closer to home, it is with a sense of sadness that I step down from my position as Principal of Creekside at the end of this school year,” Tumilty said in an announcement on March 28.
Both outgoing principals are remaining in their positions until the end of the school year, and emphasized in their messages to families in March that they would be working to make the transition in leadership as smooth as possible.
