Students at the San Ramon Valley Unified School District are set to be met by significantly fewer staff members across the district’s departments and school sites next school year pending a final decision by the Board of Education this week.

The board is set to review and take a final vote on a proposed package of layoffs that is part of a $26 million spending reduction plan approved earlier in the year, which is set to eliminate nearly 200 positions across classified and certificated employees.

A majority of those layoffs and eliminations impact certificated staff and teachers represented by the San Ramon Valley Education Association, whose representatives have led protests at school sites over recent weeks amid ongoing labor negotiations, which are also set to be discussed at the next board meeting.

A total of 129.368 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) certificated positions are currently on the chopping block, including 20.7 counseling positions and 34.8 elementary teacher positions, eight English teacher positions, 8.9 math teacher positions, five social worker positions, and 10 core teacher positions.

Proposed cuts to certificated staff also include the elimination of directors of assessment, research, and evaluation, and educational equity and three curriculum coordinators.

More than 60 classified FTE positions are also poised to be eliminated or reduced, including the director of communications and community relations, communications and administrative support specialist, one budget analyst position, 10 custodian positions, 4.86 instructional assistant positions, and 16.25 paraeducator positions.

The SRVUSD Board of Education is set to meet at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (Feb. 25). The agenda is available here.
