Superintendents from school districts throughout the region are set to gather in San Ramon next week as just some of the speakers set to discuss ongoing changes in the current political landscape and the related challenges facing education statewide.
The Advocacy Day event, hosted by the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs in partnership with its counterparts from Pleasanton, Las Trampas Creek, the Peralta district and the 32nd district, is set to feature a wide-ranging lineup of panelists including elected officials and education policy experts.
“This event is an opportunity for parents, educators, and community members to hear directly from key decision-makers about the future of education in California,” said SRV Council of PTA’s Advocacy Day Chair, Lisa Gross in a press release from the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. “With so much change happening at the political level, it’s crucial that we stay informed and engaged to advocate for policies that benefit our students.”
Asm. Rebecca Bauer-Kahan (D-Orinda), Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord), State Senator Aisha Wahab (D-Hayward), and Asm. Mia Bonta (D-Oakland) are among the local legislators joining the event, which also features a student panel and a panel of local superintendents.
“With the ever-evolving school funding landscape, our goal remains consistent – to ensure that students receive the support and resources they need to thrive,” SRVUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack said in the district’s press release. “I am honored to participate in this forum, as it’s a valuable opportunity for collaboration and information sharing.”
Cammack is set to be joined by some of his Tri-Valley counterparts, PUSD Superintendent Maurice Ghysels, DUSD Superintendent Chris Funk, as well as superintendents from the neighboring Moraga and Acalanes unified school districts for a panel discussion on how the district leaders are balancing uncertainties over funding while seeking to prioritize student programs.
The day’s agenda also includes analysis by keynote speaker Ken Kapphahn, senior fiscal and policy adviser for the California Legislative Analyst Office on the policy considerations that impact funding and programming in education, and a student panel offering on-the-ground perspectives about the current state and future of local education.
Advocacy Day is scheduled to kick off at 8:30 a.m. April 25 in the San Ramon Community Center at 12501 Alcosta Blvd. Registration and more information is available here.
