The San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board of Education is poised to vote on finalizing millions of dollars in budget cuts that it initially approved at the start of the year after district management and the teachers union reached an agreement on provisions of the proposed spending cuts.
The item comes to the board following the ratification of an agreement between the district and the teachers union.
The two parties reached an agreement May 22 to include an addendum requested by SRVEA leadership after a majority of members voted against ratifying the agreement as it had previously been worded due to concerns over language in provisions on an early retirement deal and a return to negotiations should the district’s finances take a positive turn.
“This ratified agreement allows us to restore Student Support Counselor positions at our middle schools and return two Teacher Librarian positions to California High School and Dougherty Valley High School,” Superintendent CJ Cammack said in a June 2 announcement. “It also clarifies a process for future negotiations.”
The agreement also provides clarity on where funds from a proposed block grant from the state for the upcoming school year would go, according to Cammack.
“Furthermore, if we receive a state block grant in the 2025-26 state budget, for one year we’ll be able to restore 4th and 5th-grade class sizes, elementary counselors, four Social Worker positions, and eliminate two of the three furlough days for SRVEA members,” Cammack said.
The latest development comes after months of stalled negotiations between district management and SRVEA, with bargaining units from SEIU and CSEA having reached tentative agreements with the district on a $24 million spending reduction package that was approved by the board in January.
Now the board is set to vote on finalizing agreements with all three bargaining units and the district, along with holding a public hearing on a draft budget for the 2025 to 2026 school year ahead of the July 1 deadline to adopt a budget.
The SRVUSD Board of Education is set to meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday (June 10). The agenda is available here.
