Residents in the northwestern quadrant of San Ramon making up city’s District 1 are set to have a new representative on the City Council starting next year, with longtime incumbent Scott Perkins opting not to seek reelection and two newcomers seeking the position in November.

One of those candidates is Vasanth Shetty, a finance and technology executive, city Economic Development Advisory Committee member and graduate of the city’s Government 101 and Planning Academy programs who is running on a platform highlighting his passion for the city and desire to serve its residents.

“My candidacy for the San Ramon District-1 City Council reflects my deep passion for public service and my unwavering commitment to enhancing our community,” Shetty said on his campaign website. “As a long-time resident, a dedicated parent, and active participant in local non profit organizations, I understand the needs and aspirations of our neighborhood.”

Shetty added that he believed his professional and volunteer background have prepared him well to tackle challenges associated with the city’s rapid growth with “practical and innovative solutions,” including his career in finance, technology and program management, his current participation in the San Ramon Police Department’s Community Academy, and his completion of the city’s Government 101 and Planning Academy programs.

“I am inspired by San Ramon’s potential and motivated to ensure our city thrives as a safe, sustainable, and fiscally responsible community,” Shetty said. “I believe in fostering an inclusive environment where every resident is well-informed and actively engaged in our city’s affairs. I am committed to speaking up and taking action to protect the values that make our city great.”

Shetty is a father of two daughters, whom he and his wife raised in San Ramon and who graduated from San Ramon Valley public schools. He has worked at a number of startups as well as more established companies including Google, Stanford Health Care and AT&T.

“Managing complex programs has prepared me to navigate challenges, build consensus among diverse stakeholders, and deliver results in fast-paced environments,” Shetty said. “Throughout my journey, my involvement in community and public service has connected me with incredible leaders who have inspired me to give back.”

Shetty pointed to public safety as his top campaign priority, with other priorities including fiscal stability, preservation of open spaces, economic growth, and the use of technology to bolster the city’s operations and traffic efficiency.

“My goal is to serve with integrity, empathy, and a forward-thinking approach that prioritizes public safety, fiscal responsibility, sustainable growth, and the well-being of all residents,” Shetty said. “I value your input and would love to hear from you.”

Shetty is running against fellow newcomer Robert Jweinat, with both candidates having filed nomination papers during the extension period for seats without incumbents running that was spurred by Perkins’ decision to step down from the dais after five terms.
