In a flurry of wagging tails, floppy ears, and boundless energy, StumpyCon is set to take Pleasanton by storm this Saturday at the Alameda County Fairgrounds.

Formerly known as Corgi Con, the event has become a staple in the hearts of dog lovers, celebrating the charm and charisma of “short-statured” pups.

Originally held in San Francisco since 2014, the convention made the leap to Pleasanton in 2023 after requiring more space.

“Moving to the fairgrounds has allowed us to expand and accommodate more attendees and activities. Plus, the spacious outdoor venue provides a perfect setting for dogs to socialize, play and have a great time,” said Cynthia Lee, the event’s founder and CEO.

“We’ve been able to offer more amenities and space for both our furry attendees and their human companions. There is plenty of parking, easier access and more room for vendors, activities, and dog-friendly attractions,” Lee added.

While corgis remain the stars of the show, the event has undergone a rebranding to include all dogs of a shorter stature – now dubbed StumpyCon.

Recognizing the diversity within the realm of small dogs, event organizers decided to broaden their horizons and embrace all breeds of a “shorter stature.”

“The decision to change the event name from ‘Corgi Con’ to ‘StumpyCon’ reflects our commitment to inclusivity and celebrating all breeds with short legs, not just corgis,” Lee said. “While corgis hold a special place in our hearts and have been the inspiration behind our event we wanted to ensure that all dogs with similar characteristics feel welcome and represented.”

“By embracing the term ‘Stumpy’ to encompass a wider range of breeds, we aim to foster a sense of unity and belonging within the short-legged dog community. Whether it’s a corgi, dachshund, basset hound or any other adorable short-legged breed, they’re all equally deserving of recognition and celebration at StumpyCon,” Lee added.

“Our hope is that the name change will resonate with dog lovers of all backgrounds and encourage a more diverse gathering where everyone feels included. After all, it’s not about the breed (but) it’s about the shared joy and companionship that dogs bring into our lives.”

Lee said the event also provides a great opportunity for owners and dogs to connect with each other and celebrate their relationship.

“StumpyCon is also a wonderful opportunity for dogs and their owners to strengthen their bond in a fun and supportive environment,” Lee said. “Throughout the event there are plenty of activities designed to facilitate interaction and connection between dogs and their humans from participating in games and competitions together to exploring the vendor booths.”

Following the success of the 2023 event, which drew over 5,000 humans and 2,000 corgis, expectations are high for another con.

“We see so many pet owners engage with other like-minded dog lovers, exchange tips and stories and forge new friendships based on their mutual love of furry companions. It’s a chance for both dogs and their owners to socialize, make memories, and deepen their relationship in a lively and welcoming community setting,” Lee said.

StumpyCon will include a variety of activities for both human and canine guests to participate in. Highlights of the event include a costume contest, talent showcase and frisbee competition.

“Our costume contests always steal the show. When those dogs strut their stuff in their outfits, everyone absolutely loves it,” Lee said. “The agility courses are a hit too.”

“Guests can also expect a wider variety of food and drink options at StumpyCon thanks to the fairgrounds’ facilities. We’ve partnered with local vendors to offer more for both humans and dogs,” Lee added. “We’re thrilled to be part of the vibrant dog-loving community here and look forward to continuing to grow and evolve with our attendees’ feedback and support.”

Event tickets for the 2024 StumpyCon in Pleasanton, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday (April 20), are available to purchase on the Alameda County Fairgrounds website.
