Summer is always a busy time at animal shelters, but on Thursday the Contra Costa County shelter in Martinez announced it is waiving adoption fees for cats in order to address overcrowding.
According to Contra Costa Animal Services, the shelter gets its highest level of stray animal intake during the summer, which when combined with an annual influx of litters of kittens adds more pressure on shelter capacity.
“Every adoption creates space for another animal in need,” Contra Costa Animal Services director Ben Winkleblack said in a news release from the shelter. “Right now, our shelter is caring for more animals than we have room for, especially cats and kittens. If you’ve been thinking about adding a pet to your family, there has never been a better time. By adopting, you’re not only giving one animal a second chance – you’re helping us make room to care for the next animal that comes through our doors.”
The shelter is currently waiving all adoption fees, though a $25 dog licensing fee may still apply, Animal Services said.
For those who want to help out but don’t want to adopt, there are temporary foster pet opportunities available.
All animals come spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped before going home, the shelter said. There are currently over 150 pets seeking permanent or temporary homes.
Interested adopters and fosters can view the shelter’s available pets at www.ccasd.org, or come to meet them at the adoption center in Martinez, which is located at 4800 Imhoff Place. It is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays).
