Principal Beverly Tom said Thursday that the recent break-ins at Alamo Elementary have not threatened the safety of the students, as the burglars have only come after and before school hours.
“The good news is that they don’t want to be here when people are here,” she said.
Noting the school’s near-freeway location, Tom said she encourages parents and teachers not to leave valuables in their cars at the school parking lot.
“If they can get the goods- the bootie- they will keep coming back,” she said.
The Jan. 31 incident was not the first burglary at the school. There were attempts this summer and one successful burglary this December, Tom said. The school put up security cameras this June and constructed a fence this week to slow down thieves who hope to use I-680 as a fast escape route.
“Anytime we can deter people from making a quick in and out we’re going to,” Tom said, adding that the fence would be an obstacle for potential intruders.
A new lock will also be put on the computer lab door.
Tom said the suspects, who stole three computers from the lab in the early morning hours, made off with two computers that had viruses. Only one was in good working condition, she said, adding that the school was lucky in that respect.
E-mails were sent out to the parents of students at Alamo Elementary in Early Feburary, notifying them of the incident. In response, one parent donated four iMacs to the school’s use.
