The Mustang Dynamos U-16 white girls soccer team won the championship game at the end-of-the-season Dick King Tournament vs. the Mustang Legend at the Mustang Soccer Complex on Nov. 9 with a score of 6-3. It was a brisk autumn night but the girls were red hot.
The two teams had met before in the regular season when the Legend beat the Dynamos 4-0. It was the Legends second win all season.
This game was all Dynamos from the start with an early goal from forward Catherine McSweeney followed by another goal from her minutes later. Some of the other goals were scored by left wing Heather Rigby, right-mid Madeline Hammitt, and center-mid Gohar Jaffar.
Dynamos Head Coach Jose Luis Velo has had Jim Reget by his side as assistant coach for the past five years. They closed out the regular season with 5 wins and 5 losses.
The Mustang Soccer League has over 5,000 children registered in Alamo, Danville, Diablo, San Ramon and Walnut Creek area. This represents nearly one out of every two students in the schools that fall within the coverage area.
The Dick King Tournament is named after a true champion of athletics in our community. He devoted countless hours to his children’s joy of sports and in turn to Mustang Soccer from 1979 to 1985, when he died at age 39 from complications from a water skiing accident. He was president of the League for two years, was a member of the Danville Parks and Recreation Commission, as was instrumental in the creation of multi-purpose sports fields behind Baldwin Elementary School.
