The traditional launch of colorful hot air balloons at the Art and Wind Festival on Monday morning was prevented by strong winds blowing the wrong way.
While the festival website warned that the balloons would not launch if it was too windy, they did not mention wind direction as a factor. Early Monday morning, the wind was blowing in the direction of Mount Diablo and not the preferred flight path towards the Altamont Pass.
Two balloon teams set up their equipment to inflate their colorful crafts anyway so the crowds who came out at 6 a.m. would not be disappointed.
The balloons did not take flight but did provide some color against the overcast skies.
