Visiting the one-room schoolhouse in the Tassajara Valley is one of the highlights of attending elementary school in the San Ramon Valley, as well as a long-lasting memory. This week, Roving Reporter Stan Wharton asked third graders from Green Valley Elementary What do you like about attending school in 1888?

Part of the school district’s local history curriculum, the Tassajara School was built in 1889 as a one room elementary and functioned until 1946 when enrollment declined too low to keep it open. Over 30,000 students have experienced an 1888 school day in the interactive living museum setting, which graduated many members of pioneer families such as Roger Povda, Gordon Rasmussen and Betty Casey.

Each student picked an “old” name to match their 1800’s dress.
