It’s summertime, which means a great time to vacation and visit the wonderful public parks. This week roving reporter Stan Wharton stopped by the Danville Library to ask: What’s your favorite national, state or regional park? Click on the photos to see the answers.
Robert, Julianne and Madeleine Gable,
Athenian School sixth-grader, mom and Dorris-Eaton School third-grader:
Our favorite is the White Mountains National Park in New Hampshire, which is part of the Appalachian Trail. It includes Mt. Washington, the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi. We also love Mt. Diablo State Park, especially when it has a dusting of snow on it.
Mary Zellhart, retired sales rep: Yosemite is my favorite park. I’ve always been there either in the spring, summer or fall, but would like to visit there in the winter season.
Nicole Holthuis, educational researcher: I wish I was familiar with a lot more parks than I am. I think, just for beauty, Grand Teton National Park is phenomenal. We went there when we went to Yellowstone, and we were more impressed with Grand Teton. For a weekend hike we like Calaveras Big Trees State Park off of Highway 4. We also take advantage of our lucky location next to Mount Diablo and hike there as much as we can.
Pat and Carl Taibl, retired nurse and SRVHS freshman: My husband and I enjoyed Yosemite years ago before our son, Carl, was born, and we climbed half way up Half Dome. However, they instructed us not to go the rest of the way because of darkness. More recently, we all did the Grand Canyon by helicopter, which was thrilling. Finally, Carl likes to hike Mount Diablo a lot. We love them all.
Greg Rufe, retired corporate executive: The areas I like to hike are Mt. Diablo State Park and Las Trampas Regional Wilderness, which are both right here in Danville. In fact, my wife and I just got back from a hike in Las Trampas and didn’t see a soul. I just retired and am looking forward to doing more of this. We’re so fortunate to have these privileges so close to home.
