San Ramon’s Live Oak Elementary School was recently named a ‘Mix It Up Model School’ by the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance Program for its tolerance efforts during the 2015-16 school year.

“We are delighted to recognize Live Oak Elementary,” said Teaching Tolerance director Maureen Costello. “The Model Schools don’t just pay lip service to the values of respect and inclusion. They went above and beyond to provide students an opportunity to get to know their classmates.”

In all, 91 schools received the ‘Mix It Up Model School’ honor this year.

The selected schools were chosen for their “exemplary efforts to foster respect and understanding among its students and throughout the campus during the recent school year,” according to San Ramon Valley school district officials.

During the year, the honored schools — like Live Oak — hosted a ‘Mix it Up at Lunch Day’ that included students, cafeteria staff, administration and students.

“For 14 years, the ‘Mix it Up at Lunch Day’ event has helped students demonstrate the importance of respecting each other’s differences,” officials said.
