The Danville Police Department has determined that the cause of a fatal motorcycle crash in June was an unsafe lane change by the motorcyclist, according to police chief Allan Shields.

Juan Gomez, a 21-year-old from Revere, Mass., was riding westbound in the far right lane on Danville’s Camino Tassajara on the evening of June 21. When he approached the light at Sycamore Valley Road at around 7:15 p.m., he swerved right to avoid stopped traffic, hit the curb and was ejected from the vehicle, according to Shields.

“During the collision, his helmet came off, and he suffered severe head injuries in the accident,” the police chief said in an interview Thursday.

Gomez was treated by paramedics from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District before being pronounced dead at the scene, Shields said.

The investigation into the fatal crash concluded on Aug. 8, according to Shields. The report determined that the motorcyclist was traveling between 35 and 40 mph.

The police department concluded that drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash, Shields said.
