The school board is set to hear a presentation on student enrollment multi-year projections Tuesday night.

According to the district’s “facts and figures” page, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District currently has around 32,000 students enrolled in its 36 schools.

Back in February 2016, a demographics report by Davis Demographics & Planning, Inc. projected that district enrollment would continue to grow for at least the next seven years. The report concluded that enrollment was expected to jump 8.3% between then and fall 2022, reaching a record high of about 34,800 students.

Estimates were based on data on local birth rates, new housing developments and possible movement into and out of the district. The demographers cited enrollment increases every year since at least 1993, when the district had around 17,400 students.

However, at recent board meetings, board members and staff have pointed to decreasing enrollment figures at local elementary schools, which could imply growth leveling out in the future. At the Aug. 15 meeting, Superintendent Rick Schmitt pointed out that while this year’s overall enrollment numbers saw 60 students over the budget target, there are now 400 fewer elementary students from the previous year, and there are currently about 1,000 fewer students in kindergarten than in 9th grade.

Enrollment numbers could affect district funding from the state, which is determined in part by average daily attendance.

The open session meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. inside the boardrooms at the district’s administrative complex at 699 Old Orchard Drive in Danville.
