The town of Danville recently rolled out a new summer program that brought two community pianos to the heart of downtown.

Danville celebrates July as the “Parks Make Life Better Month,” and the pianos are an initiative tied directly to the program. Starting this week, two pianos were put on display in front of the Danville Community Center (420 Front St.) and the Danville Senior Center (115 East Prospect Ave.). The pianos transform the usually quiet downtown into a lively place of art, entertainment and shared conversation.

“We are always looking for ways for our residents to express their artistic sides, and to embrace the culture available here in Danville,” said Henry Perezalonso, town recreation, arts and community services director. “I think it’s going to be a great gathering space in our town.”

Lauren Torchiana and Katherine Gilen, students at San Ramon Valley High School, promoted the event by bringing the idea to the Danville Recreation, Arts and Community Services Department in fall of 2017.

Torchiana was inspired by her experience playing an outdoor piano while on a family vacation in Coronado, and loved the sense of positivity it brought to the local community. Her cousin, Gilen, had convinced her to play the piano at a young age, and both of them worked to bring this project to fruition.

The pair invited Grace McClure, their longtime friend, to help with the project. As an accomplished artist at San Ramon Valley High School, McClure provided considerable artistic talent to the design and painting of the pianos.

The pianos will remain on display for public use through September — for weather reasons.
