San Ramon Valley communities have been recognized for their efforts to keep residents safe, with Danville and San Ramon being named two of the top three safest places in California by a national security company’s recent study.
After analyzing crime statistics from the Golden State’s 482 municipalities, Safewise — a home and online security provider — found that Danville is the safest town and neighboring San Ramon is the third safest city in California.
“We are very proud of the ranking Danville received, and I think it is directly attributable to two things: an outstanding, proactive, police force; and a very strong community/police partnership,” Danville Town Manager Joe Calabrigo said.
“We want to thank our police department for its great work and our residents who help make San Ramon one of the best cities in America,” San Ramon Vice Mayor Phil O’Loane said. “This further confirms what most of us already know: San Ramon residents and business owners are safe to live, work and play in their homes, stores, parks and open spaces.”
Rankings are determined based off of the number of violent crimes — such as aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery — in each city. In order to get an accurate representation of crimes that occur between municipalities with vastly different population sizes, the study calculates the rate of crimes that occur per 1,000 residents. Ties were broken by factoring in the number of property crimes — burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft — in the city.
Data used in the study was gathered from FBI crime statistics reported in 2016.
Achieving the designation of the safest municipality in California, Danville is reported to have had 0.20 violent crimes per 1,000 residents, which is nearly 96% lower than the national average. Property crime in the town came out to 8.13 occurrences per 1,000 residents.
San Ramon also had an exceptionally low violent crime rate, earning recognition as the second safest in all of Northern California, with FBI statistics reporting 0.51 violent crime occurrences per 1,000 resident and 10.70 property crimes per the same ratio.
Interim Police Chief Craig Stevens said San Ramon’s top safety ranking is due to the teamwork of police and its residents.
“We’re very proud of the great work and diligence of our police department but also the widespread involvement of residents in monitoring their neighborhood and implementing security measures,” said Stevens, who has worked in law enforcement since 1992.
Nearby Pleasanton achieved the distinction of the 30th safest city in California with a violent crime rate of 1.23 per 1,000 residents, and neighboring Dublin made it onto the top 50 at the 46th spot with 1.44 violent crime occurrences per 1,000.
Last month San Ramon was recognized as the best place to raise a family in the Bay Area and the second best location for families statewide. Danville was ranked sixth on that list.
