Aspiring young playwrights, actors and theater-lovers alike are invited to learn from professional artists during the upcoming Student Day, a virtual master class offered by Danville’s Eugene O’Neill Foundation.

Set to be held on March 27 (Saturday), this is the foundation’s 29th Student Day program and, while the tradition continues, this year’s class will be offered via Zoom due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

During the Student Day class, aspiring actors will work with industry veterans on movement, voice and character development through games and short-scene work, while young playwrights will focus on learning play structure and character development.

A good opportunity for students interested in getting a jumpstart on their theatrical training, the day will provide participants with training offered in top Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts programs, according to organizers.

Students must have a video camera set up for Zoom, with good sound and strong internet connection, as well as a clear space around them where they can stand and move while still being seen by the camera. Also, while green-screen capability is not required, foundation staff will be discussing its use.

The program is offered for free, thanks to the support of the Dean and Margaret Lesher Foundation and the Wood Family Foundation.

Student Day is from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a half-hour lunch break at noon, on Saturday, March 27. Students can apply directly online at www.eugeneoneill.org.

Another event coming soon is the Foundation’s 10-day Studio Retreat this summer at O’Neill’s Danville estate, which is known as Tao House and is part of the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site. The retreat may be held in-person depending on Contra Costa County’s COVID-19 health regulations.
