Climate change town hall

Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) is hosting his next town hall discussion in Orinda this week, aimed at hearing from constituents about their concerns and questions surrounding climate change and other environmental issues, as well as providing updates from his office on the topic.

The discussion will also include topics related to climate change, such as expanding clean energy options by providing well-paying jobs in the industry, as well as natural disasters and water shortages.

The event is set for Thursday from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Founders Auditorium at the Orinda Community Center at 28 Orinda Way.

Rotary club spelling bee

The San Ramon Valley Rotary Club is set to host the regional competition for the national Scripps Spelling Bee, after the three students sponsored by the club went on to the regional competition in Washington D.C. earlier this year.

Next year will be the club’s second time hosting the regional bee, with registration now open for schools interested in participating through Sept. 29. Last year’s regional competition attracted 46 students from across all 12 Bay Area countie.

“It is a great opportunity for elementary and middle school students to build their vocabulary and confidence in the language,” said Sudha Ponnaganti, youth services chair for the San Ramon Valley Rotary Club.

The next regional competition is set for early next spring, ahead of the national competition scheduled to return to the nation’s capital next May.

City Hall docents

The city of San Ramon is seeking volunteers to serve as docents to lead groups of third-grade students on tours of City Hall.

In addition to leading the tour, the program includes a scripted mock City Council meeting to give students a hands-on sense of the work conducted in the distinctive headquarters in the city’s central core.

Tours are scheduled from 9:30-11 a.m. on weekends, with docents having the ability to select dates that match their availability.

White Pony Express auction

The Contra Costa County nonprofit White Pony Express is celebrating its 10th anniversary with an auction this fall aimed at funding the organization’s mission to address food waste and hunger throughout the county.

Items at the upcoming “All of US” auction are set to include wine, vacation packages, original artwork, and luxury goods. The organization is seeking donations for the auction through Oct. 24.

White Pony Express is described as “food rescue” organization that seeks to obtain food that would otherwise be discarded and provide it to people facing food insecurity.

Wandering Wine and Whiskers

The Animal Rescue Foundation is hosting its 20th annual fundraiser and ped adoption event next month at the organization’s headquarters in Walnut Creek.

“This year’s event gives supporters the opportunity to explore ARF like never before,” ARF CEO Susan Lee Vick said. “Mingle with friends, party with adorable animals, and learn exactly how ARF operates behind the scenes. You won’t want to miss this!”

The Wandering Wine and Whiskers fundraiser is scheduled for Sept. 23, with tickets available now and early registration encouraged.

“People support ARF because we’re saving lives every day,” ARF development director Stephanie Chew said. “Wandering Wine & Whiskers features the compassionate, heartwarming stories that showcase our mission of People Rescuing Animals … Animals Rescuing People.”

The event is set to include craft beer and other beverage options, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction at the ARF headquarters at 2890 Mitchell Drive in Walnut Creek.
