East Bay Regional Park District directors have their pick for the next permanent general manager – the man who has held the position on a temporary basis for nearly a year.
Acting General Manager Max Korten is the finalist for the job after a nationwide recruitment that spanned five months and drew nearly 100 applicants, EBRPD revealed with the public release of the agenda for the Board of Directors meeting Tuesday.
“Following completion of the recruitment process and careful consideration of the candidates’ qualifications, experience, leadership approach, and vision for the District, the Board identified Max Korten as the candidate best suited to serve as the District’s next General Manager,” Jessica Romeo, assistant general manager of human resources, wrote in her staff report.
The board is set to vote on a three-year contract for Korten that includes an annual salary of $388,731.24 as well as other compensation such as health and fringe benefits, retirement contributions, vacation and sick leave and transportation allowance – plus terms for job duties, regular performance evaluations and separation.
Korten joined East Bay Parks as deputy GM in October 2024, coming over closer to his hometown after working for a decade at Marin County Parks, including nearly eight years as director and general manager.
He assumed the acting GM role at EBRPD early last November after the sudden departure of then-GM Sabrina Landreth. The board waited until March to launch the formal recruitment process, which the district says was managed internally by Romeo and not Korten.
The board’s regular meeting in Oakland is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. Tuesday (Aug. 4). Among other items on the agenda is a closed-session discussion regarding the legal claim filed by Landreth in which she alleged discrimination, harassment, retaliation and corruption. EBRPD directors interviewed by the Pleasanton Weekly in February denied the allegations.
