The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday detained a man suspected of committing a series of burglaries in central Contra Costa County over the last few months, totaling over $300,000.
With the help of the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol, the suspect has been identified as 26-year-old Gilberto Ramirez of Merced. He is currently being held in Merced County jail on charges of burglary, felony evasion and weapons violations, according to a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office press release.
As part of an ongoing investigation, detectives determined a suspect for the string of robberies and obtained a warrant for his arrest, alongside search warrants for his residence and vehicles associated with the burglaries.
Investigators requested that the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office conduct a traffic stop on Ramirez’s vehicle on Thursday, after spotting him driving on Interstate 5 near Corning. The man did not yield to the traffic stop, leading officers on a pursuit.
CHP assisted in the pursuit, which ended in a vehicle crash. Ramirez allegedly fled on foot following the crash. A juvenile was also in the vehicle and was taken into custody but was not publicly identified.
Other law enforcement agencies in the Bay Area are investigating if the same suspect is linked to burglaries in their jurisdictions.
The investigation is currently ongoing, and the sheriff’s office declined to publicly reveal the exact locations and timelines of the burglaries.
