A man arrested by San Ramon police on suspicion of theft last week died in the Contra Costa County jail in Richmond on Monday afternoon, according to authorities.
The death, which officials said does not appear to be suspicious, is under investigation by the sheriff’s and district attorney’s offices under the countywide protocol for fatal incidents involving law enforcement.
The male inmate, whose name has not been released, was originally taken into custody by the San Ramon Police Department last Thursday (Aug. 22) for multiple felony theft charges and subsequently booked into the Martinez Detention Facility, according to the sheriff’s office.
At about 1:56 p.m. Monday (Aug. 26), deputies responded to the inmate being found unresponsive in the housing unit at the West County Detention Facility and called jail medical staff to the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. It was not immediately clear when the inmate was transferred from Martinez to Richmond.
“Life-saving measures were attempted by deputies, medical staff and paramedics. The inmate, who was housed alone, was later pronounced deceased at the scene,” the sheriff’s office stated.
