The San Ramon Police Department investigated a threat of violence at California High School Monday afternoon and the campus was placed in “secure” status.
At roughly 12:26 p.m. Monday, the San Ramon Valley 911 Communications Center received a transferred call from a male who threatened the California High campus with violence, according to live updates on SRPD’s website.
“Our School Resource Officer was on scene when the call was received and was almost immediately joined (by) multiple officers who took positions around campus to ensure the safety of all on site,” the department said.
At 12:40 p.m., school administrators decided to place the campus in “secure” status, which means students and staff remain in classrooms behind locked doors, and school continues as normal. This is a different situation than a lockdown, which is when students and staff remain in classrooms behind locked doors, staying quiet, low and out of sight. Windows and blinds are closed and lights are turned off.
Police personnel deployed drones above the school located at 9870 Broadmoor Dr. in San Ramon to conduct aerial surveillance and search for any potential threats to the safety of those on campus.
During the search, the school sent out a message to the parent community, notifying them of the situation and advising them to stay away from the school.
“School/District officials and law enforcement are working together to keep the campus site secure,” the message read. “As we are able, we will share additional information as soon as possible. We know this can be disconcerting, but we ask that you please remain calm and do not call or go to the school. No one is allowed to enter or exit the school at this time. Until further notice, the campus remains closed, students are safely inside their classrooms or other school facilities.”
The police department shared an update at 1:25 p.m. saying that personnel had checked all parking lots and searched for threats within the campus.
“Our Drone Team’s aerial searches have not found any suspicious individuals or situations that would indicate potential violence,” the department said.
Following the search, the administration lifted the “secure” status and sent another message to parents informing them.
San Ramon Police personnel stayed at the high school for the remainder of the school day to ensure the safety of everyone on campus; however, their last update at 1:37 p.m. confirmed that the department did not find any signs that the threat of violence was legitimate.
