Construction has kicked off on the long sought-after South County Training Facility that is set to offer state-of-the-art training for local firefighters as well as serving as a public safety hub, with facilities in use by San Ramon Valley firefighters, dispatchers and police alike.
Officials with the city of San Ramon, Contra Costa County and San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and San Ramon Police Department gathered at the site of the planned facility for a groundbreaking ceremony on Jan. 25. The event also included a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new San Ramon Public Safety Facility that now houses SRPD headquarters, fire department administration, a new 911 call center and an emergency operations center.
“Training is the foundation for our firefighters,” SRVFPD Fire Chief Paige Meyer said at the event in January. “This will challenge our firefighters and give them experiences they will face here.”
Con Fire Chief Lewis Broschard had previously emphasized his support for the project and requested that the county Board of Supervisors consider approving Measure X funds for expansion and construction at a Sept 19 board meeting.
SRVFPD officials noted that District 2 Supervisor Candace Andersen had been a critical source of support in securing funds for the project, which was ultimately approved unanimously by the board.
“Having well-trained firefighters in our community and in the region is critical to our public safety,” Andersen said in an announcement from SRVFPD last Wednesday. “Helping fund the new San Ramon Valley training center with $1.3 million annually through Measure X, Contra Costa’s 1/2-cent sales tax, was the right thing to do. My colleagues on the Board of Supervisors agreed and unanimously supported this ongoing allocation of tax dollars.”
The updated facility and the consolidation of local public safety services has been a long time coming, with the training facility being the first new one for SRVFPD in 55 years.
“We look forward to the future when our Firefighters are even more skilled, our community is safer, and emergencies are continued to be met with a swift and effective response,” SRVFPD Board President Jay Kerr said.
The new training facility is under construction on the site of the former fire administration offices at 1500 Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon, with the new public safety facility now open at 2401 Crow Canyon Road in San Ramon.
