Bike rodeo
The San Ramon Valley’s Street Smarts program is set to host a community bike rodeo this weekend, aimed at educating young cyclists of all levels on skills, knowledge, and safety tips while riding bicycles and scooters.
The day’s activities are open to children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old, with family members invited as spectators.
The event is scheduled for Saturday (May 11) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Charlotte Wood Middle School at 600 El Capitan Drive in Danville. More information and registration is available here.
Police youth academy
The Danville Police Department is seeking applicants for this summer’s four-day Police Youth Academy for ages 14 through 18 and one-day Junior Youth Academy for ages 11 to 13.
The program, led by DPD officers and staff, is aimed at providing students a glimpse into the inner workings of the town’s police department and a sense of what working in law enforcement is like.
“Youth will have the chance to learn about the exciting career of Law Enforcement through demonstrations in police tactics, forensic collections, report writing, investigations and traffic patrol in addition to a special tour of the Danville Police Department,” town officials said in an announcement Wednesday.
Registration is currently open for Danville residents. It is set to open to non-residents on Tuesday (May 14).
Danville Goes Global
The Danville Youth Council is hosting its annual celebration of international cultures next weekend, featuring booths that showcase a range of countries and cultures as well as prizes, crafts, and other activities.
The day will also feature organized games inspired by sports that are popular around the world.
The event is scheduled from 1-3 p.m. on May 18 in the Danville Community Center and Library at 420 Front St. More information and registration is available here.
Traffic safety films
Aspiring filmmakers at the San Ramon Valley Unified School District were recognized earlier this year for their submissions to Street Smarts’ “Be Reel” video contest, which consist of 90 second public service announcements centered on traffic safety.
A total of 125 students from the district submitted 35 videos in line with this year’s theme of “Safety FIrst!” with their works showcased at a March 25 awards ceremony at Danville’s Village Theatre.
“We are so fortunate to have this collaboration in the Street Smarts program, as it is our responsibility as a school community to care about traffic safety for bikers, pedestrians, and drivers of all ages,” said SRVUSD Superintendent John Malloy in an April 30 announcement. “We believe in teaching our students how to be safe travelers not just around our schools but out in our communities. I applaud the creativity shown by our students in producing these films, which are powerful educational tools regarding traffic safety.”
Eighteen finalists were announced in the March ceremony, with the winning submissions available to view here.
