The two candidates for the San Ramon City Council’s District 1 seat continue to be neck and neck in the San Ramon Valley’s closest race of the election, but that margin has grown to triple digits as of the latest ballot count.

Contra Costa County elections officials released updated election results Friday afternoon, which show attorney Robert Jweinat’s slight lead over opponent Vasanth Shetty growing from 88 votes at the end of Election Night to 112 votes as of 3:12 p.m. Friday.

Jweinat has been in the lead by a slight margin as of Election Night when he was ahead by 58 votes in the initial tally, which grew to 88 votes as of the updated results released early Wednesday morning.

County elections officials estimated that Friday’s update accounted for 90,000 additional ballots, bringing the total to 451,172 ballots counted so far as of the end of the week, out of the 722,861 registered voters in Contra Costa County. It’s unclear how many ballots remain to be counted in San Ramon, or in District 1, which the winner of this race will go on to represent on the council.

So far, ballots from a total of 6,948 District 1 voters had been counted as of Friday afternoon, with 3,530 — 50.81% — of those voters supporting Jweinat and 3,418 or 49.19% supporting Shetty. The two newcomers are competing to take over the seat being vacated by longtime Councilmember Scott Perkins at the end of his current term.
