The San Ramon City Council voted earlier this month to select a new planning commissioner to carry out the remainder of a term vacated by previous commissioner S. Ashar Ahmed in December.

The council conducted interviews with a total of eight applicants at a special meeting Feb. 19, ultimately selecting Beatriz “Betty” Avila — a former planning technician with the Town of Danville.

The other applicants consisted of Srinivasa Kottakota, Richard Lieblich, Sajeev Sidher, Yohannes Tilahun, Donald Yakulis and Chirag Kathrani, a candidate for mayor in the 2024 election who also sought appointment to the District 2 City Council seat that was ultimately filled by Richard Adler. An additional applicant, former PUSD administrator Jim Hansen, withdrew his application.

District 3 Councilmember Sridhar Verose made the motion to select Avila to fill the seat for the remainder of Ahmed’s term through June 30, 2027. It was seconded by District 4 Councilmember Marisol Rubio and passed unanimously in a 5-0 vote.
