The Amador Valley swim and diving teams had a solid number of swims in the North Coast Section meet at the Concord Community Pool on May 3-4.

In the team competition, Amador was second on the boys’ side with 209 points, not far behind De La Salle who took its second straight NCS title with 236 points.

The Amador girls were fifth with 154 points. Carondelet was the winner with 310 points.

On the girls’ side, Rylee Hutchinson — just a sophomore — led the way winning the 500 freestyle in a 4.55.15, an All-American consideration time. It was an amazing race as the 20-lap race was decided by 0.01 seconds, as Hutchinson out-touched Dublin’s Kaitlin Lee.

In the prelims, Hutchinson swam 4:52.85 which is an All-American automatic time. She was also third in the 200 free with a 1:49.59. Both times qualified her for this week’s CIF State meet in Clovis.

Another sophomore Lillyana Caples was strong in both events, finishing third in the 500 free in 4:59.54 (state consideration time) and 14th in the 200 free in 1:56.11.

Freshman Francesca Lin got seventh in the 500 free going 5:04.82 (state consideration time) and she won the consolation final in the 200 free in a 1:54.55.

Other notable swims came from junior Elayna Ling (8th, 100 butterfly, 57.28, state consideration time; 6th in the 100 breaststroke, 1:05.63, a state consideration time).

Junior Namya Sarup was 13th in the 100 breast, with a 1:07.34. The 400-free relay of Caples, Lin, Ling and Hutchinson got sixth, and Hutchinson, Caples, Ling and Nicole Xu teamed up to get seventh in the 200-medley relay. Both are state consideration times.

On the boys’ side, senior Devyn Caples got second in the 200 individual medley in an All-American consideration time of 1:49.52. In the 500 free, he was third. In his qualifying heat, he went 4:28.09 which is an All-American automatic time.

Freshman Cade Vieler was fourth in the 200 free and 100 backstroke. Senior Andrew Lillie was seventh 500 free (4:41.44). In the prelims, his time of 4:38.16 was a state meet consideration time.

Sophomore Oryan Liu was eighth in the 200 IM (1:56.26) and 13th in the 100 breast (59.58).

Amador was strong in the relays as well, finishing second in the 200-medley relay with Vieler, Caples, Oryan Liu and Lillie getting an All-American consideration time of 1:33.76 (state automatic time). Caples, Tupper, Lillie and Vieler teamed up to get third place in the 400 free relay.

Finally, diver Ben Lentz got second on the 1-meter board.

Foothill volleyball

After getting a bye in the first round, the Division I top-seeded Falcons beat Berkeley 25-18, 26-24, 25-17 to advance to the semifinals of the NCS tournament.

Five seniors led the way with Yun Bae (32 assists, 5 kills, 3 aces), Casey Collins (12 kills, 8 service points), Caden Stedman (8 kills, 3 blocks), Kayan Vohra (7 kills, 4 blocks) and Noah Mitzenmacher (9 receptions, 8 digs) getting it done.

The Dons had a mixed week, winning one NCS match, then losing the second to end their season.

The win was 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 over Deer Valley. Highlights came from Max Riter (17 kills, 9 digs, 3 aces), Parker Brookhart (10 kills, 3 blocks, 7 service points), Nick Nayak (3 aces, 12 service points), Aidan Husejnovic (5 kills, 3 blocks) and Ryan Yu (27 assists).

In the quarterfinals, Amador fell 30-28, 27-25, 25-16 to Castro Valley.

The key stats were: Riter (22 kills, 2 aces, 2 blocks, 11 digs), Brookhart (40 assists, 1 block), and Husejnovic (9 kills, 2 blocks).

Amador won its first-round match in a convincing manner, with Riter and Brookhart shining offensively and defensively. In the quarterfinals, the Dons had multiple set points in the first two sets but could not get wins.

Amador Valley concluded with a 21-11 season.
