The California Highway will be especially vigilant in enforcing seatbelt laws over Memorial Day weekend, as part of the nationwide “Click It or Ticket” campaign. Starting at 6 p.m. tonight through midnight Monday, 80 percent of available officers will be on the road. Of the 2,905 people killed in car crashes in 2003, 43.6 percent were not wearing seatbelts, CHP reported, although California’s seatbelt compliance rate is more than 90 percent, among the highest in the nation.

Last year over Memorial Day weekend, 37 people were killed on the roads in California, according to CHP.
