Additional details about a new “Gilmore Girls” themed festival coming to Danville this fall are on tap at this week’s Town Council meeting after the news was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle last week.
The upcoming “Flannel and Foliage” festival being produced by the private organization Small Town Venture is among the main topics of Town Manager Tai WIlliams’ monthly report, one of a total of five regular informational reports comprising a majority of this week’s council agenda.
Danville was selected for the first time this year as the first West Coast location to host the annual festival, which has taken off on the East Coast in towns resembling the fictional Stars Hollow, Conn., in which “Gilmore Girls” is set.
“Small Town Venture selected Danville as the setting for the West Coast expression of this tradition — recognizing what many residents already know: Danville has the walkable Downtown, historic character, tree-lined charm, and community feel that make it a quintessential Stars Hollow-type setting,” Williams wrote in her monthly report.
Small Town Venture is seeking funding from the town’s business promotion grant program, and has already connected with a number of local businesses interested in participating according to Williams. She pointed to the event as an example of the advantage to a change in the grant program, which is now available on a rolling basis rather than via an annual application cycle.
Williams said that the event is expected to generate strong attendance regionally and further out, noting that organizers “have signaled the potential for media interest around the event’s inaugural weekend.”
“Beyond the excitement of a new fall festival, Flannel & Foliage reflects the type of event Danville is actively seeking to attract,” Williams wrote.
Among the advantages of the event that Williams cited were the town’s ability to host it within existing town-owned facilities without requiring street closures, facility rental revenue, and its potential to repeat annually.
“And when a boutique hotel eventually lands downtown, events like this become natural drivers for overnight stays, which will expand both the visitor experience and the local economic impact,” Williams added.
Additional details are set to be available as the festival dates from Oct. 23-26.
The Danville Town Council is set to meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 1). The agenda is available here.
In other business
* The council is set to hear reports from the Bicycle Advisory Commission, farmers market manager Stephanie Arentz, the town’s new communications and economic development Manager Heather Tiernan, and a semi-annual Chamber of Commerce liaison report from Vice Mayor Robert Storer.
* The council is poised to issue proclamations recognizing Danville’s 10-year-old All Star Little League team for its Northern California state championship, and recognizing Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 as National Hispanic Heritage Month.
* Nola Woods, public affairs director for the county’s mosquito and vector control district, is set to provide a presentation.
* The council is set to consider a resolution to approve a contract for storm drain repairs at San Ramon Valley Boulevard and Hill Place as part of its consent calendar.
