Water is flowing again at the central outdoor feature in Blackhawk Plaza, with repairs to the pond, fountain and waterfall areas complete as of recent weeks.

The closure of the water feature in late spring raised concerns among plaza patrons because of the impact on the duck population, the smell from pockets of stagnant water and the eyesore of empty pond beds – albeit signage onsite said the problem would be fixed by mid-summer.

The maintenance project lasted a few weeks later than indicated, but the ponds were full and fountains were flowing earlier this month. Blackhawk Plaza management did not respond to a request for comment on the reopening.

Located in eastern Danville near the affluent Blackhawk gated community, Blackhawk Plaza has been in the news for mainly the wrong reasons this year. Beyond the need for duck rescues and relocations during the pond project, the shopping center continues to experience many vacant tenant spaces – including the large building Draeger’s Market exited in the winter – and ongoing bankruptcy proceedings and other legal cases involving its ownership.
