The Danville Town Council is set to consider signing off on an agreement with state and county transit agencies plus other local communities that would allow for a ramp metering project on the I-680 corridor to move forward.
The current proposal serves as a collaboration between the Contra Costa Transportation Authority and Caltrans with the goal of improving traffic and accident detection, as well as overall operations.
Caltrans has already allocated funds to install fiber-optic cables along I-680 and I-780, as well as installing and upgrading traffic operation systems and ramp metering along the I-680 corridor while widening and implementing HOV lanes in some locations, with the project limits ranging from the Martinez-Benicia Bridge to Alcosta Boulevard in the southbound direction, and from the bridge to Burnett Avenue in the northbound portion of the highway.
Meanwhile, ramp metering between Alcosta Boulevard and Willow Pass Road is a central feature of CCTA’s Innovate 680 program that was developed six years ago, with that project aimed at supplementing Caltrans’ work.
The MOU on the table Tuesday formalizes that collaboration between both those two agencies and the communities along the way, including Concord, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, and unincorporated areas of Contra Costa County along with Danville and San Ramon.
“Participation in the MOU formalizes the Town’s role in corridor governance and ensures Danville has a seat at the table for ongoing operational decisions, performance monitoring, and any future changes to ramp metering operations that may affect local streets,” traffic engineering associate Soren Fajeau wrote in a staff report for the upcoming meeting.
The Danville Town Council is set to meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday (May 19). The agenda is available here.
