Longtime San Ramon City Councilmember Scott Perkins has informed city staff that he will not pursue a sixth term, leaving the race for the District 1 seat wide open in the November election.
A stalwart on the San Ramon City Council for nearly 20 years, Perkins has not issued a formal statement publicly about his plans, but he sent an email to the entire city employee group on July 22 telling them of his decision to bow out, according to a copy of the message obtained by DanvilleSanRamon.
“I want to let all of you know first hand that I will not be running for reelection to the District One City Council seat this year,” Perkins wrote. “I thoroughly enjoyed my time on the council in large part because of the excellent support and enthusiasm of the people on the city staff. You are all first rate and the citizens of San Ramon know that and appreciate you for your service. I wish you all the best in the future.”
Perkins has not responded to requests for comment in recent days.
A retired U.S. Navy officer and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory engineer and manager, Perkins was elected to the council for four terms at-large and then won his fifth consecutive term in office in November 2020 to become the first representative of northwest City Council District 1 in San Ramon’s first ballot upon converting to district-based council elections.
So far, two prospective candidates have pulled papers to pursue the District 1 seat — Economic Development Advisory Committee member Vasanth Shetty and San Ramon resident Jim Hansen, a retired Pleasanton Unified School District administrator and former interim superintendent — but neither had qualified for the ballot as of Tuesday evening, according to the city website.
The initial deadline to file candidacy paperwork is 5 p.m. this Friday, but with incumbent Perkins not seeking reelection, the nomination period would be extended for newcomers by five calendar days to next Wednesday (Aug. 14) at 5 p.m.
