Contra Costa County is operating with someone new handling its finances for the first time in decades, with the former assistant to Robert Campbell now completing the remainder of his term after he retired earlier in the year.

The county’s Board of Supervisors appointed Joanne Bohren as auditor-controller effective Aug. 11, marking the culmination of her decadeslong career with the office in which she most recently served as assistant to her predecessor.
“I’m honored to take on this role and look forward to working collaboratively with County leadership,” Bohren said in an announcement Aug. 11. “My goal is to uphold the highest standards of fiscal responsibility while continuing to improve transparency and efficiency in our financial operations.”
The auditor-controller is tasked with oversight of financial reporting and auditing across the county’s departments, management of its payroll and disbursements, and the overall integrity of its financial practices.
Campbell retired after more than 30 years in the position in March. Bohren worked in his office for more than 25 years, first in an entry level position, then rising through the ranks. Bohren was appointed to the remainder of Campbell’s term through 2027.
“Joanne will provide strong financial leadership for Contra Costa County,” said Board Chair and District 2 Supervisor Candace Andersen. “Her expertise in financial management and dedication to public service will be invaluable in maintaining the County’s fiscal health and accountability to our residents.”
The auditor-controller position is an elected seat in Contra Costa County, meaning that it will be up for a vote on the 2026 ballot.
