A 40-year-old man died while in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility on Thursday, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office.

The man, identified as Patrick Smith, was arrested by Walnut Creek police and booked into the jail at about 10 a.m. Wednesday on suspicion of narcotics offenses.

Sheriff’s officials said in a press release that Smith was found unresponsive in a room by a deputy at the jail’s intake area shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday. Deputies began life-saving measures but Smith was later pronounced dead.

His cause of death has not been determined and the case is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office and Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office as part of the county’s standard protocol for in-custody deaths.
