The Contra Costa County Office of Education is celebrating the release of this year’s Best High School Rankings from U.S. News and World Report, which names five schools countywide as among the top 100 in the state, including two in the San Ramon Valley.
Dougherty Valley High School was ranked at No. 25 statewide in the 2026 to 2027 rankings, with Monte Vista High School coming in at No. 92 statewide. The two local schools were ranked nationally at 190th and 622nd, respectively, in the nationwide report on nearly 18,000 public schools.
“These rankings reflect school communities that have the resources, rigor and strategic support in place to foster student achievement,” Contra Costa County Superintendent of Schools Lynn Mackey said in a press release Wednesday.
Miramonte, Campolindo and Acalanes high schools – all in the Acalanes Union High School District encompassing campuses in Lafayette, Orinda, Moraga and Walnut Creek – came in at Nos. 29, 34, and 87 respectively, in the statewide rankings.
“Their performance among the top schools in the state is truly something to celebrate,” Mackey said. “My hope is that schools throughout our county can learn from these examples and help even more students thrive academically while preparing the next generation for success.”
San Ramon Valley Unified School District Superintendent CJ Cammack told DanvilleSanRamon that the district was “incredibly proud” of Dougherty Valley and Monte Vista, and congratulated them on their high marks.
“This honor reflects the dedication of our students, educators, staff and families, and the culture of excellence that exists across our schools,” Cammack said. “While rankings are just one measure of success, they provide a meaningful acknowledgment of the academic opportunities, college readiness and strong student outcomes our schools are achieving.
Overall, California came in at number six nationwide in this year’s list, behind Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, Florida and Connecticut.
Elsewhere in the district, California High School in San Ramon was ranked at No. 222 statewide and No. 1,353 nationally, with San Ramon Valley High School in Danville coming in at No. 335 statewide and No. 2,077 nationally. The alternative Venture High School was ranked at No. 1,244 statewide and No. 11,803 nationally.
