The Central Contra Costa Sanitary District is marking a major milestone with a community open house this Saturday – billed as “a once-in-a-decade sewer party!”

Better known as Central San, the public utility district that provides sewer service for much of the area from Martinez to the San Ramon Valley is celebrating its 80th birthday and inviting residents of all ages to its headquarters and treatment plant for treats, games, tours and other activities in honor of the special occasion.

“Our customers have entrusted us to protect public health and the environment by collecting and cleaning our communities’ wastewater. We take this role very seriously, but we also know people may not consider a sewer utility as a place to visit,” Central San General Manager Roger Bailey told DanvilleSanRamon.

“Our 80th anniversary is our chance to thank our customers and invite them to see how we are using new technology, capital improvements, proactive maintenance, science and more to better serve them — all while sharing lots of humor and fun,” Bailey added.

The open house will feature free food and ice cream, district trucks, games including toilet racers (“like go-karts, but with toilets”), hands-on activities, photo-ops, educational exhibits, behind-the-scenes tours of the wastewater treatment plant and more.

Officials said space is limited for treatment plant tours, so preregistration is encouraged. The other activities do not require registration. The district also urged people to bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated and to leave pets at home, other than service animals.

No registration is needed for the other activities, so feel free to drop by and enjoy! Please bring a reusable water bottle and leave pets at home (except for service animals).

The open house is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday (June 13) at 5019 Imhoff Place in Martinez. Only accessible parking will be available there; officials said free parking with shuttle service will be offered at the Contra Costa County Assessor’s Office (2530 Arnold Drive in Martinez) and Contra Costa County Public Works Department (255 Glacier Drive in Martinez).

“In addition to plenty of fun, the Open House offers the community an opportunity to learn more about where their wastewater goes and to meet the people who operate and maintain the sewer system every day,” officials said. “Central San maintains over 1,500 miles of neighborhood sewer pipes and cleans more than 13 billion gallons of wastewater every year for nearly 500,000 residents and over 15,000 businesses throughout central Contra Costa County.”
