Roberta Potorff, Homemaker: I’ll remember my father who was in the tail end of WWII in the Philippines and the South Pacific. Even though he was on a warship, he didn’t see any action. He processed photo graphics that other photographers took in action. He passed away in 2009. -
Susan Nagle, Retired attorney: My maternal grandfather was in WWII. I was 14 when he died in 1976, and I remember the flag presented to my grandmother by a veterans group at the Pawtuxet, R.I., cemetery. All the flags are flown on Memorial Day weekend for all the veterans buried there. It’s very moving. -
Megan Molkenbuhr, Montair Elementary fourth-grader: My great grandfather, George Freitas, better known as “Gidge,” was a captain in the U.S. Navy during WWII. When he was training in a fighter plane he was lost at sea off the coast of California. I saw a letter to his dad while he was in the service telling him how much he missed them. He died too young. -
Bob Beaton, Carpet retailer: We work on Memorial Day, so it’s difficult to set aside time and reflect that day. But I can’t help but think about the mess we’re in as we conduct operations in Afghanistan and the service men and women who have lost their lives there. -
Larry Rodrique, Retired police officer: I’ll remember all my uncles who served in WWII and survived the war. My father’s two brothers were both wounded separately on the same island in the South Pacific, and they were both put into the same medical tent without either one knowing the other was there. One day one of the brothers thought he heard the other brother’s voice and discovered they were both in the same medical facility.
