To celebrate Danville’s history, town officials have invited the community to Hap Magee Ranch Park for a special plaque ceremony and town picnic this weekend.
As part of the town’s efforts to preserve Danville’s historic resources, members of the community will gather at Hap Magee Ranch Park on Saturday to unveil a plaque commemorating the history of the popular park.
Following the ceremony residents are invited to a town picnic, where hot dogs and drinks will be provided. Town officials are encouraging interested residents to come enjoy the park and bring a side dish or dessert for a community potluck meal.
Hap Magee Ranch Park was previously used as a ranch for longhorn steer and before that was a summer camp for San Francisco orphans, known as Camp Swain, according to town officials.
The Magee Ranch plaque is the most recent in a series of historic identifiers issued by the Heritage Resource Commission and Town Council as a way to preserve the town’s historic relics. Previously, on March 22, the town also issued a plaque at the Eddy House, located at 500 Hartz Ave.
The town’s historic walking tour website describes the Eddy House as a Queen Anne Cottage that was built in approximately 1903. It was lived in by the Eddy family continuously from 1903 to 1946, who are descendants of Leonard Eddy, a pioneer who was one of the first U.S. settlers to live in the area.
“We are pleased to continue this program,” town of Danville Principal Planner David Crompton said in a statement. “Honoring these sites is a great way to memorialize the history of our Town.”
Other significant Danville buildings to receive a plaque and designation as a historic resource are the former First Presbyterian Church of Danville, 201 Front St., the Cabral House on 551 Hartz Ave., and the Foster house on 402 Hartz avenue.
Saturday’s picnic and plaque ceremony is scheduled to begin at noon, at Hap Magee Ranch Park, 1025 La Gonda Way.
