Walnut Creek police shot and killed a 46-year-old man who was allegedly armed with a pellet gun early Thursday morning.

Officers had responded around 12:10 a.m. to the area of Buena Vista and Alvarado avenues on a report of a male wearing dark clothing who was looking into homes and parked vehicles with a flashlight, according to police.

When officers arrived, they found a man matching the description and holding what appeared to be a firearm. Officers issued commands for him to drop the weapon but he “did not comply, and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” police said in a news release.

The man, a Walnut Creek resident, was pronounced dead at the scene and his name has not been released. The weapon was later determined to be a pellet gun that resembled a handgun, according to police.

Investigators have not shared more information about what led to the shooting but said no officers were injured. As part of department policy, the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the Walnut Creek Police Department at 925-943-5844 or an anonymous tip line at 925-943-5865.
