A GoFundMe that was created after a man died in a Jeep accident in a Pleasanton nearly two months ago has raised over $10,000 to help build a well near a school in Afghanistan in his memory.
According to the fundraiser, the victim — Elham Ahmad Waziri — will now be honored through the construction of this well thanks to the contributions of over 60 donors.
“Your support will help supply clean water and create a lasting legacy in Elham’s name,” the fundraiser’s description states.
Pleasanton Police Department Lt. Nicholas Albert told the Weekly on Wednesday the incident that led to Waziri’s death took place just before 11 p.m. June 20 in the 5300 block of Owens Court. According to Albert, police responded to a report of an unresponsive person who was thrown from a vehicle.
The person, who was identified as Waziri, was found lying unresponsive in a roadway near a Jeep.
“The preliminary investigation indicated that Waziri was standing on the vehicle’s exterior running board while holding onto an interior grab handle as the vehicle reportedly performed a series of rapid, circular turns, causing Waziri to be ejected from the vehicle,” Albert said.
Upon arrival, Albert said officers immediately began taking life-saving measures to save Waziri’s life until paramedics arrived. He was then transported to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he later succumbed to his injuries, Albert said.
Albert said the fatal crash is still under investigation but that the driver of the Jeep remained at the scene of the accident and spoke to police.
“Upon completion of the investigation, the case will be submitted to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office for review and consideration of any appropriate criminal charges,” Albert said.
Pleasanton PD did not publicly report the fatality nor its investigation at the time. The East Bay Times reported the news for the first time last Friday.
Following his death, the “Build a Well in the name of Elham Ahmad Waziri” drive was created on GoFundMe in order to honor his life by raising enough money to build a well in Kabul, Afghanistan. The fundraising page said Waziri died on June 22.
According to the fundraiser, the well will be 250 meters deep and will be equipped with “pipes to supply clean water to a nearby school of nearly 13,000 students, a hospital, a masjid, and the townspeople”.
“Elham Ahmad Waziri was someone who made everyone around him feel important and loved,” according to the fundraiser.
“He was known for bringing people together, whether it was for gatherings, Thanksgiving celebrations, or spontaneous boba runs,” the fundraiser further stated. “He always encouraged others to do the right thing and was never afraid to call out actions that went against his values.”
