State Sen. Jerry McNerney closed his district offices in Dublin for a “short period” on Wednesday due to the delivery of a suspicious package, the Congressman confirmed same-day.
“Thankfully, the incident turned out to be a false alarm,” he said in a statement. “I want to thank Dublin Police Services and the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office for their prompt, professional and thorough response and for their work in keeping our community safe.”
DPS responded Wednesday to a report of a “large suspicious package” at McNerney’s offices located on the 6800 block of Regional Street, according to Dublin police Lt. Phillip Corvello.
The package had arrived the prior evening, addressed to McNerney and one of his aides, but it did not have a return address nor a sender’s name, Corvello told Pleasanton Weekly.
Staff were not expecting the package and it was considered atypical mail, Corvello said.
Authorities were unable to surmise the sender, but located it as coming from Oregon state, he added.
“There was nothing specifically suspicious about the package itself, but due to the uncertainty of the sender or the exact origin of the package, and out of an abundance of caution, we notified the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit,” Corvello said.
Before the unit arrived, DPS evacuated the building. They determined that it was not necessary to evaluate any nearby businesses or buildings because of the package’s location, he said.
McNerney said the closure occurred in consultation with the State Senate.
Upon review by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, the package was found to pose no threats, according to Corvello.
Alameda County Sheriff’s Office officials determined no crimes had occurred and staff were permitted to re-enter the building after about one hour of the evacuation, he added.
