The Foothill girls’ volleyball team split EBAL matches last week, falling 3-2 at Carondelet, then rebounded with a sweep of Amador Valley.
In the 25-19, 20-25, 13-25, 25-20, 12-15 loss to Carondelet, the highlights came from Paige Nelson (14 assists, 13 kills, 10 digs), Brooke Stedman (25 assists, 11 digs) and Olivia So (20 digs, 5 aces).
In the 25-15, 25-19, 25-17 win over Amador, the Falcons were led by Kaycie Burdick (16 kills, 14 digs), Lulu Hoenninger (8 kills, 2 blocks) and Kait Vogel (8 kills, 8 digs).
Amador water polo
The Amador Valley girls’ water polo team kept the ball rolling last week with a convincing 18-4 win over Granada.
The Dons got six goals from Regan Braga to lead the scoring. Susan Swyers had five goals, Olivia Ritter three, and Juliette Nudelman two to round out the multi-goal scorers.
Claire Kunich and Abigail Jones added one each to finish out the scoring for the Dons. Kate Hopkins had six assists and two steals for the Dons while Addi Drain added two assists. Deepika Suresh had nine saves for Amador.
On the boys’ side, Dons went 4-0 the weekend of Sept. 21 to bring home the title of the Vintage Valley Tournament in Napa.
They opened the tournament with a 16-5 win over Novato behind three goals each from Landon Kenney and TJ Chandler. Bryce O’Nesky, Tyler Kaste, and Eli Morris added two goals each. Anthony Sowul, Jake DeMichiel, Evan Shackleford, and Collin Jennings had one goal each to round out the scoring.
Game two was the closest of the tournament, with Amador beating Heritage 14-9. Kenney had five goals and O’Nesky four to lead the Dons. Sowul and DeMichiel had two goals each. Will Campbell had the other Amador goal.
A 17-7 win over Liberty was the third game of the tournament. O’Nesky led the way with six goals, with Kenney adding five. Kaste and DeMichiel had two each, with Sowul and Brendon Maschal getting one each to complete the scoring.
In the last game, Amador beat Castro Valley 11-3. Kenney had three goals, with Morris and O’Nesky adding two each. Single goals from Kaste, Chandler, Campbell and DeMichiel finished out the scoring tallies.
Dons at Falcons on gridiron
The traditional big rivalry game between the two Pleasanton schools is set for this Friday night (Oct. 4) at Foothill. Game time is 7 p.m.
The game in recent years has been in the middle of the season due to the teams falling in different East Bay Athletic League divisions. This year the Dons are in the Mountain Division, while the Falcons are in the Valley.
Last week in this space we wrote about how the teams started the season. Here is how the teams rolled into the rivalry.
Amador: The Dons got a huge 24-23 win over Acalanes as they have little margin of error to finish at least 5-5 and earn a spot in the NCS playoffs.
This might be the team few want to play as the season goes on. The offense is led by nationally known senior quarterback Tristan Ti’a. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound slinger has thrown for 1,315 yards with 10 touchdowns and one pick. He can also carry the rock as he has run for 408 yards and nine touchdowns in five games.
Ti’a favorite target thus far has been junior Anthony Harrington. Now in his third year starting for the Amador varsity, Harrington has 33 receptions for 545 yards and three touchdowns. Harrington has carried the ball for 187 total yards.
Foothill: The Falcons have performed well this season, coming from behind late to win two of their three games. Last week was a shootout but Foothill fell 52-45 to unbeaten Half Moon Bay.
The other loss came to an also-unbeaten American Canyon.
Senior quarterback Jason Knight, who came into the season having never played a snap at the position, has been a leader for the young team.
Michael O’Donoghue, a 5-11 senior receiver, has been the best at hauling in the passes for the Falcons, as well as providing vital leadership for the team.
Tri-Valley Community Television is broadcasting the Amador-Foothill football game live online and on TV30 at 7 p.m. Friday, as well as airing repeats during the week ahead. The other two EBAL football games scheduled for live broadcasts by TV30 are Granada at Dublin on Oct. 18 and Livermore at Dublin on Oct. 25. Learn more at tv30live.org.
