Joybound People & Pets is helping animals forced from their homes by the Southern California wildfires by taking 31 dogs and a cat into their care at their Walnut Creek facility.
The rescue organization said it responded to a call from Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control last week, welcoming the homeless pets Monday evening. Of the 31 dogs, 17 are puppies.
The animals being transferred are coming from county shelters’ adoptable populations to clear space for incoming animals affected by the fires.
“This is just the beginning of a long and sustained rescue campaign,” Joybound said, in a statement. “Our goal is to assist overburdened shelters and animal first responders so they can dedicate their efforts and facilities to the incoming injured and displaced animals.”
Joybound said it’s waving adoption fees on all animals until further notice, to “increase adoptions and return to helping our Southern California neighbors as quickly as possible.”
