The Livermore Public Library is scheduled to host about a dozen events over the coming weeks in honor of Latine Heritage Month.
Celebrated nationally from this Tuesday (Sept. 15) through Oct. 15, the commemorative month is a way to honor the histories and cultures of Latine Americans.
The library’s programming will include author talks, live music and arts, all of which is free and open to the public, according to a statement from library officials announcing the events.
Kicking off the in-person celebrations on Saturday (Sept. 19), award-winning author Aida Salazar is set to present her latest book “Stream” and “Sing Me a Story”, of which she was an editor, at the Civic Center Library.
She will also talk about her journey as a writer, according to library officials. Following the presentation, Salazar will host a Q&A and book signing with copies available for purchase at the library from Towne Center Books. The event is set to begin at 2 p.m.
The following week, Grammy Award-winning artist and author Lucky Diaz is scheduled to host two virtual author-talks about his award-winning, bilingual children’s book, “Paletero Man.”
The program dubbed, “Where the Paletero Man Goes: A Journey of Neighborhood, Music and Art”, is scheduled for presentation in English beginning at 4 p.m. Sept. 24, followed by a presentation in Spanish at 5 p.m. Registration is required.
During the last weekend of September, The Diana Gameros Trio is set for a musical performance of original songs and Mexican classics at the Civic Center Library beginning at 2 p.m. Sept. 27.
The three-person performance will feature Diana Gameros, a Mexican-born singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist; clarinet and saxophone player Patrick Wolff as well as upright and electric bass player Thomas Edler.
Through her music, Gameros explores subjects such as family, migration and home, library officials said.
Gameros has three albums in Spanish and English with her most recent release “Volver a la Luz” having come out this year. Gameros has also been featured multiple times on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.
On Oct. 1, Chilean artist Antonia Lara Sanchez is set to lead a workshop at the Civic Center Library beginning with a traditional Chilean folktale, followed by a sculpture workshop based on the story. The adults-only program requires registration. Library officials encourage registration via phone at 925-373-5505.
Beginning on Tuesday (Sept. 15) and running through Oct. 15, “Take and Make Craft” kits of papel picado will be available at all Livermore library branches while supplies last. Kids will learn about the art’s significance in Mexican celebrations and create their own pieces with tissue paper, library officials said.
